Belfast Trial: Man Granted Anonymity Order in Historic Sex Offences Case

A West Belfast man has been granted an anonymity order as he prepares to stand trial for historic rape offences.

Court Appearance
The man, who cannot be named due to the court order, appeared at Laganside Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, March 12. He faces one count of rape and another of indecent assault against a female between December 31, 2001, and July 28, 2003. The man did not enter any pleas during the hearing and only spoke to confirm that he understood the charges against him.

Anonymity Order and Safety Concerns
His representation had applied for an anonymity order for the man on the grounds that naming him would put his safety at risk. Claims were made that graffiti had targeted him near his home address and that members of the INLA had come to his house and threatened him. The anonymity order was granted by the court but can be challenged at a later date. The man is now due to stand trial at Crown Court for the offences at a date that is yet to be set.
