Tragedy Strikes: Fatal Shooting at Busy Irish Bar in Sunny Spanish Tourist Spot

Two people have been shot dead at a packed Irish bar in a popular Costa del Sol holiday hotspot. The incident unfolded at the entrance of Monaghan's Fuengirola, a venue well-known among Irish tourists.

Masked Gunmen Open Fire

Local reports say masked men ran into the Irish bar after getting out of a car outside and started opening fire, around 11pm Spanish time on Saturday, May 31. It was not immediately clear if they had been trying to target individuals or were shooting indiscriminately.

Police Investigation

One of the two victims is understood to have been killed instantly after being hit in the chest, reports the Irish Mirror. The second victim also died at the scene before being transferred to hospital. National Police are at the scene along with local police employed by Fuengirola Town Hall.

Venue Description

Monaghans Fuengirola describes itself online as a place 'where you can relax and spend the day enjoying great home cooked meals on a sunny terrace and watch live sporting events.' It also bills itself as a 'family friendly sports bar and restaurant located in Torreblanca, Fuengirola opposite one of the area's most popular beaches.'

Police Update

A spokesman for the National Police in Malaga, in the force's first official comment on the incident, said this morning: 'Around midnight an incident with firearms occurred in Fuengirola, specifically at an entertainment venue along the seafront. Two males died as a result from gunshot wounds. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made so far.'

Victims Unidentified

Officers did not respond to queries about the nationalities of the victims or offer any extra information about them. A British woman answered the phone at the Irish bar but said she had been told by the police not to make any comment. One of the men killed is said to have died instantly after being shot in the chest. The other also died at the scene despite desperate efforts to save him before he could be transferred to hospital.
