SDLP Launches 'Help Can't Wait' Plan

The SDLP has unveiled a groundbreaking plan aimed at addressing the mounting pressures on the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and hospital Emergency Departments (EDs). The initiative, named 'Help Can't Wait,' draws inspiration from the successful W45 policy of the London Ambulance Service, which strives for a 45-minute handover window for patients arriving at hospitals.

Proposal Highlights

- Reducing Handover Times: The party anticipates a 50% reduction in ED handover times, potentially freeing up to 60,000 operational hours annually.

- Enhancing Communication: Dedicated staff may be introduced to enhance communication and patient flow between the ambulance service and EDs.

- Utilizing Cohorting: Implementing cohorting practices to group patients with similar needs together for more efficient care and resource utilization.

Staff Recruitment and Costs

In a bid to bolster medical capacity within EDs, the SDLP proposes recruiting an additional 54 Band 5 nurses to provide round-the-clock cover at a cost of £1.9 million. Additionally, the recruitment of 45 Band 7 nurses as senior decision-makers in EDs is suggested at a cost of £2.4 million.
