Scottie Scheffler Clinches PGA Championship Title Over McIlroy Challenge

Scottie Scheffler lived up to his words about Rory McIlroy's challenge as he clinched the PGA Championship title on Sunday.
Scheffler's Triumph
Scheffler had begun the day with a five-shot lead over Jon Rahm, but the pair ended up tied at the top midway through the final round as Rahm's string of birdies saw him join the co-lead.
However, the world No. 1 regained his momentum and ended up winning the trophy by the same margin he had started with, while Rahm fell back to tied-8th place.
Many had believed McIlroy could challenge him at Quail Hollow, but back-to-back majors ended up being just a pipe dream for the Northern Irishman.
McIlroy's Challenge
After playing the first half of the tournament together, Scheffler was asked by the Mirror US if he was concerned about McIlroy's game.
The 36-year-old had a tough PGA Championship run, finishing three over and 15 shots off eventual winner Scheffler.
McIlroy was also dealt a bad hand before the tournament when the Holywoodman was told the driver he planned to use was deemed 'no longer permissible,' forcing him to switch to something new.
Competitive Spirit
Scheffler was unfazed by his competition at the time, as he insisted he wasn't looking at how McIlroy was doing and had been more focused on his own performance. The American golfer dismissed any suggestion of an internal rivalry with McIlroy, pointing out that the dynamics could shift on a different occasion.
Triumphant Moment
Ultimately, Scheffler’s focus on his own performance paid off as he triumphed in the tournament while McIlroy ended tied-47th alongside Scotland's Robert MacIntyre.
While McIlroy remained out of the spotlight, Scheffler basked in his triumphant moment with the media.
Speaking after his victory, he said: 'This is a special tournament. Any time you can win a major championship is pretty cool and I'm proud of how I did this week just staying in it mentally and hitting the shots when I needed to.'
