Chaos in Ballymena: Rioter Hit in Disturbing Incident

A 23-year-old who was 'shot in the balls' with a baton round during serious public disorder in Ballymena has been denied bail.

Denial of Bail
Curtis Dunlop, with an address at Lanntara in Ballymena, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates' Court. He was accused of riotous assembly in Ballymena - the third night of serious disorder this week in the Co Antrim town.

Police Account
A detective constable told the court that the defendant was observed throwing masonry and fireworks towards police vehicles and officers. The officer stated that the male had been 'struck by an AEP baton round' during the disorder.

Bail Opposition
The officer opposed bail, citing the defendant's previous convictions for disorderly behavior and arrests for breaching bail conditions.

Defense Argument
The defense solicitor highlighted the lack of evidence connecting the defendant to the offense. The solicitor emphasized the importance of a fair due process considering the defendant's health problems and vulnerability.

The defendant is scheduled to appear before Ballymena Magistrates' Court on July 10 via videolink.
