PSNI Silence on Mugshot Policies Raises Questions

PSNI Silence on Mugshot Policies Raises Questions

The PSNI has refused to answer questions on why it has released mugshots of a handful of people convicted of serious crimes, yet has refused to for others.

Selective Release of Mugshots
The PSNI recently released the mugshots of Oliver MacCormack, Robert Rodgers, Derek Brown, and Kenneth Harvey after their convictions for various serious offenses. The move aimed to encourage other potential victims to come forward, according to the PSNI spokesperson.

Controversy and Policy Review
Despite the release in the sexual exploitation case, the PSNI has denied requests for mugshots of other convicted offenders, citing lack of policing purpose. The handling of different cases has led to scrutiny of the PSNI's policy. A review of its mugshot policy is ongoing since April 11, 2024, making it the only UK police force not routinely issuing mugshots of convicted offenders.
