Chaos in Ballymena: Police Urge Restraint Amid Unrest

The PSNI has pleaded for calm after violence erupted on the streets of Ballymena, following a protest related to a recent sexual assault case.

Tensions and Unrest
The tensions had followed an earlier peaceful protest in support of the family of a girl who was the victim of an alleged sexual assault in the Co Antrim town. An estimated crowd of around 2,500 gathered to vent their anger after the recent report of sexual assault.

Violence Erupts
Social media footage shows protesters burning road barriers and bins as part of a barricade on the street. Masked individuals threw missiles at PSNI vehicles and targeted houses by smashing windows. It's reported that at least four houses were set on fire, and about 10 police officers were injured in the disorder, which received widespread condemnation.

Political Reactions
Local MP Jim Allister expressed his dismay at the situation, mentioning concerns over immigration and the need for calm. Justice Minister Naomi Long also condemned the disorder, stating there is no place for such violence in society.
