Northern Ireland Urged to Aim for Smoke-Free Future by 2035

The Department of Health is being urged to follow the rest of the UK by setting a smoke-free target of 2035 in Northern Ireland, which should include banning smoking around schools, playgrounds, and other locations used by children.

Support for Restrictions
A recent survey commissioned by Asthma + Lung UK Northern Ireland revealed that over 85% of respondents support restricting smoking locations to safeguard children's health. The call follows Wales' lead, which implemented a ban on smoking near schools and playgrounds in March 2021.

Health Risks for Children
Passive smoking can be particularly harmful to children, impacting lung development and increasing the risk of asthma and other conditions. Experts emphasize the urgent need for protective policies to secure a healthier future for the next generation.

Advocating for Change
Leading voices, including school principals and health advocates, emphasize the importance of creating smoke-free environments around educational institutions and other child-centric locations. The time to act is now to bridge the health gap and reduce preventable deaths associated with smoking in Northern Ireland.
