Council Urged to Seize Lucrative Opportunity in Electric Car Charging Market

A Co Down rep has called on the council to tap into the profitable electric car charging industry amidst concerns over the limited availability of charging points in Newry City. And the selected location at River Street carpark has faced criticism for its weekend-only availability, leaving local residents concerned.

Opportunity for Expansion

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) has approved 18 new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging locations as part of a green energy scheme. Calls have been made for the council to develop a more strategic approach as terraced homes risk being left behind without access to EV charging points.

Bold Predictions and Opportunities

Councillor Cadogan Enright emphasized the potential for the council to generate millions in revenue in the transition to electric vehicles. The EV project, with 25% match funding from DfI, aims to provide charging points to homes without driveways or off-street parking, offering dual connections at each location.

The Path Forward

Cllr Enright highlighted the urgency to utilize town center carparks for revenue generation and to support the growing demand for EV charging. The need to secure more locations and encourage the scheme's progress was underscored as a significant revenue source for the council in the green economy.

Concerns and Responses

While only one charging location is currently identified in Newry City, council members raised concerns about its limited operational hours. Efforts are being made to address these issues and ensure clear enforcement of spaces dedicated to EV charging.

Looking Ahead

Council officers expressed optimism about the progress of the scheme, noting the challenges and successes in implementing this new model. Future plans include the utilization of additional carparks and the development of a comprehensive strategy for further expansion and revenue growth.
