Survivor's Plea: Battling Kidney Failure After Beating Cancer

A Belfast dad who, against all odds, survived a rare form of cancer that was discovered when he went to his GP with a leg pain is now facing an anxious wait for a kidney transplant. Father-of-one Ryan Gearon has now suffered kidney failure after making it through intense chemotherapy and multiple surgeries for a form of bone cancer known as Ewing's Sarcoma, and will require a transplant to stand a chance of survival should the cancer return.

Seeking Hope Through Transplant
He was first diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma in 2018, after seeking medical help for a sore leg - something he had initially put down to pains from standing on his feet all day during working hours in his former job as a chef.

The Road to Recovery
But the excruciating treatment has taken its toll, and the 31-year-old from Ardoyne is now suffering kidney failure - meaning he'll need a transplant to have a chance at leading a normal life, or of beating cancer a second time should it return. His mum, Deirdre, has launched an appeal for people to sign up to become a living kidney donor in a desperate bid to give her son his best chance of a normal life. Speaking to Ryan, he explained how the cancer was first discovered.
