Firefighters Battle Major Blaze in the Majestic Mourne Mountains

Over 60 firefighters from across Co Down are at the scene of another blaze in the Mourne Mountains this Wednesday evening. The blaze is understood to have been reported at Slieve Binnian mountain at Kilkeel just after 7pm and is the second major fire in the area in recent days.
Firefighting Efforts
According to the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), there are six fire appliances and 62 firefighters from Kilkeel, Downpatrick, Newcastle, Rathfriland and Newry supported by a Command Support Unit and four-wheel drive vehicles in attendance.
Locals are requested to avoid the area to help support firefighting operations. Posting on social media, South Down DUP MLA Diane Forsythe expressed sadness at the situation, urging the public to stay away and let the professionals handle the situation.
Environmental Impact
NI Water has also issued appeals for vigilance, highlighting the risks posed by wildfires to human life, wildlife, property, the environment, and drinking water catchment areas.
