Jeffrey Donaldson Trial Delayed Due to Medical Issues

The trial of former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife Lady Eleanor on charges relating to alleged historical sex offences is to be delayed due to medical reasons.

Medical Grounds for Delay
At Newry Crown Court on Friday, Judge Paul Ramsey granted an adjournment application on medical grounds after being told Ms Donaldson is currently 'unfit to stand trial'. The trial had been due to start on March 24. No new trial date has been set.

Detailed Charges
Donaldson, 62, who also did not attend the hearing on Friday, has pleaded not guilty to 18 alleged offences including rape, indecent assault, and gross indecency. The charges span a time period between 1985 and 2008, with two alleged victims.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Prosecutors are neutral on the issue but express concern over the delay impacting vulnerable complainants emotionally. The presiding judge plans to review the case again on May 16.

Political Fallout
Since being charged, Donaldson, the long-standing MP for Lagan Valley, resigned as DUP leader and was suspended from the party after leading a return to Stormont. His successor as DUP chief is Gavin Robinson, the previous deputy leader. For more breaking news, visit our homepage.
