Transformed by a Second Chance: A Story of Redemption and Opportunity

A new partnership between the Northern Ireland Probation Service and a local DIY store has been hailed by those who say its given them new opportunities. Habitat for Humanity Ireland's Collaboration with Probation Service Habitat for Humanity Ireland is working alongside the Probation Board after it received funding to assist it in delivering community service placements in their social enterprise, Habitat ReStore. Building Sustainable Communities ReStore is the low-cost DIY store that builds sustainable communities and directly tackles poverty locally, with five stores in Northern Ireland. By selling new and used building and home improvement materials ReStore helps local people to improve their homes at low cost. ReStore also provides skills and employability training for people of all ages and backgrounds and diverted more than 1,600 tons of reusable waste from landfill last year. A Message of Hope and Redemption One individual shared their experience, saying: "I was serving a custodial sentence when I had the opportunity of a placement at Habitat ReStore. Being welcomed was amazing, working alongside staff and other volunteers made me feel there was hope to rebuild my life." Changing Lives for Safer Communities Chief Executive of the Probation Board for Northern Ireland, Amanda Stewart, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in rehabilitation and resettlement.
