From Loneliness to Success: The Inspiring Journey of Northern Ireland's Refugee Turned Champion

When Farzard first received his refugee status, he felt alone and desperate for some security in life - now those fears which consumed his mind have been turned into hope for the future.
Finding Hope Amid Darkness
The 26-year-old, who resides in Bangor, recently claimed the Homesense Young Achiever Award for his remarkable triumph over challenges faced as a refugee in Northern Ireland. The accolade, bestowed by The King’s Trust, celebrates young individuals who have defied the odds, significantly improved their life prospects, and made a positive impact on their community.
A Journey of Resilience
Describing his journey, Farzad shared, "Before the program, I felt like I was 'living in darkness'. I was lonely, learning a new language, and feeling anxious about my future. However, learning new skills, building connections, and securing a job have ignited a newfound sense of confidence within me. I feel hopeful once again."
Farzad, initially drawn to The King’s Trust after a chance encounter with a helpful staff member, narrated his struggles post-refugee status: "Being alone in a new country is incredibly challenging. I felt disheartened and uncertain about my future. I constantly shifted locations, unsure each day where I would spend the night. I was determined not to succumb to despair."
After enrolling in the Get into Retail initiative, facilitated by TK Maxx in partnership with The Trust, Farzad gradually discovered a glimmer of hope: "The program period was tough as I was without a home, but I began to see light again. The TK Maxx and King’s Trust personnel supported me throughout, ensuring I could focus on securing employment irrespective of my lodging circumstances. Their flexibility was crucial, and I relished the chance to acquire new skills."
A Journey of Triumph
Following the successful completion of the program, Farzad was offered a position as an Associate at TK Maxx. Overjoyed, he expressed, "Securing this job marked the commencement of my future plans. It bolstered my confidence and instilled in me a sense of self-sufficiency. I cherish the work environment and have witnessed a remarkable improvement in my English language skills. This role serves as a springboard for my career." Farzad now juggles full-time responsibilities between TK Maxx and his role as a Teaching Assistant at a local secondary school, reveling in newfound stability and a robust support network. His self-assurance has soared, and his language proficiency has flourished.
Farzad's elation further escalated when he was selected by Soccer Street to participate in the Homeless World Cup in South Korea in 2024. Thrilled at the prospect of fulfilling his dream of partaking in a World Cup competition, he shared, "After everything I've endured, this opportunity is truly remarkable. I am presently pursuing my GCSEs and nurturing aspirations of attending university in the future. The King’s Trust holds a special place in my heart. They acted as a guiding light through my darkest times."
Upon clinching the Homesense Young Achiever Award, Farzad remarked, "This accolade is profoundly meaningful to me. It signifies my triumph over adversities and motivates me to continue aiming high." Commending Farzad's achievements, Jo Murphy, VP Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability TJX Europe, expressed, "We are delighted to endorse the Young Achiever Award and celebrate inspiring narratives from across the UK. Through our enduring collaboration with The King’s Trust, we take pride in aiding young individuals in surmounting obstacles to create a brighter future and foster positive change in their communities.
