Exciting Increase in Child Benefit Payments: Who Qualifies and How to Claim

Child Benefit payments are set to increase starting next week, with parents urged to claim and manage Child Benefit via the HMRC app.

Claiming Child Benefit Increase

From April 7, 2025, parents will receive £26.05 per week - or £1,354.60 a year - for the eldest or only child and £17.25 per week - or £897 a year - for each additional child. There is no limit to how many children parents can claim for.

Fast Payment Method

The government recommends using the free and secure HMRC app for the quickest and easiest way to claim, view, and manage Child Benefit payments. A new app feature sends notifications once the claim is received, with payments in as little as three days.

Important Considerations

Parents with an individual income between £60,000 and £80,000 must consider the High Income Child Benefit Charge. The online Child Benefit tax calculator can help estimate benefits and charges.

Plan for Change

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a new service in the Spring Statement to simplify the process for parents liable to the High Income Child Benefit Charge. Families can opt to pay the charge directly through their PAYE tax code from the summer.

National Insurance Credits

Claimants receive National Insurance (NI) credits, contributing to future State Pension eligibility. Child Benefit also ensures the child receives a National Insurance number at 16. The Child Benefit award notice serves as proof for entitlement to benefits and services.
