New Regional Obesity Management Service Unveiled in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's Health Minister has given the green light for a new Regional Obesity Management Service, the first of its kind in the region.

Introduction of the Service

The Regional Obesity Management Service is set to address the substantial annual cost of obesity to society, estimated to be around £414 million a year.

Phased Rollout

The first phase, scheduled to commence in early 2026, will focus on developing a community-based service providing lifestyle support and obesity medication when clinically appropriate, in alignment with NICE guidance.

Future Phases and Minister's Statement

Further phases will include interventions such as bariatric surgery, subject to funding availability. Health Minister Mike Nesbitt emphasized the significance of prioritizing this initiative in light of the staggering statistics on obesity in the region.

Public Consultation and Implementation

A public consultation garnered overwhelming support for the introduction of the Regional Obesity Management Service. Plans fall within the broader obesity strategic Framework 'Healthy Futures', aiming to shift focus towards preventive healthcare measures.

Key Findings and Future Plans

The public consultation highlighted the pressing need for such a service, with a focus on reducing health inequalities related to obesity. While a phased introduction is planned, today marks a crucial step towards a healthier future for Northern Ireland.
