Legendary Soap Star Set to Return to Coronation Street After 19-Year Absence

Coronation Street fans are abuzz with speculation over the possible return Coronation Streetfans are speculating about the return of a soap legend in a significant twist involving Roy Cropper. The much-loved character, played by David Neilson, first appeared on our TV screens back in 1995 as Deirdre Barlow's (Anne Kirkbride) neighbour in a block of flats and quickly became a fan favourite.

Throughout his 30-year tenure on the popular soap, café owner Roy has been central to numerous major and groundbreaking storylines. His marriage to Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh) is perhaps the most memorable. The couple, who met in the late nineties, became one of television's most cherished and enduring pairs.

Despite not having children of their own, Roy and Hayley remained together until Hayley's heartbreaking death in 2014 following a diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, reports Leicestershire Live. Roy is also recognised for his role in supporting several troubled young characters over the years, including his niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) and former resident Becky McDonald (Katherine Kelly).

Now, viewers believe a previous soap legend could be making a comeback in a dramatic plot twist. David Neilson, who portrays Roy, was recently honoured with the Outstanding Achievement award at the 2025 British Soap Awards. Prior to accepting his award, presented by Julie Hesmondhalgh, a number of his co-stars, including Katherine Kelly, recorded heartfelt video messages praising David. She remarked in the video message: "You're one of the finest actors I've ever had the privilege of working with, and more importantly you are also one of the best human beings I know."

After Katherine's unexpected tribute to David on the show, speculation is rife among fans that she might be making a comeback to the soap. On a Coronation Street Facebook fan group, a fan commented: "Katherine's appearance on the VT for David got me emotional!". Another added their thoughts: "I thought for ages that they would bring her back, it would be fantastic to see her and David on screen again." A third fan speculated: "Maybe it's a clue and she is returning..." While another enthusiast exclaimed: "Yeah get Becky back!".

Becky's initial arrival on the street dates back to 2006, where as a troubled former convict, she found solace with Roy and Hayley. Her character was central to numerous major storylines, including her wedding to Steve McDonald (played by Simon Gregson), experiencing two devastating miscarriages, and her aspirations to adopt. However, in 2012, Katherine Kelly left the show, leaving fans devastated as Becky moved to Barbados for a fresh start after an eventful relationship and marriage to Steve. Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
