Major HMRC and PSNI Raid Nabs Illicit Cigarettes Valued at £1.6m

An investigation was initiated following the confiscation of 2.7 million cigarettes in Northern Ireland. Joint Effort:
HM Revenue and Customs, aided by the PSNI, impounded the cigarettes, valued at an estimated £1.6 million in duty and taxes, on Thursday, April 24 in Newry. HMRC officials combed through a site in the Camlough vicinity and discovered 2.7 million non-UK duty-paid cigarettes. Ongoing Inquiries:
Even though no arrests have been made yet, investigations are ongoing. Dermot Clarke, Operational Lead, Fraud Investigation Service at HMRC, highlighted the significance of the raid, stating: 'This seizure shows our commitment to disrupting the illicit cigarettes trade, a criminal activity that harms funding for essential public services and undermines legitimate businesses that cater to local communities. We remain dedicated to closely collaborating with our partners to relentlessly pursue those who flout the rules.' PSNI Commander for Newry, Mourne, and Down, Superintendent Norman Haslett, also emphasized the seriousness of the seizure, commenting: 'This operation sends a clear message to those involved in this illicit activity that such actions will not be tolerated, underscoring the collective effort of law enforcement in combating the illicit tobacco market locally. The Police Service is resolute in working alongside our partner agencies with the aim of bringing to justice those profiting from criminal activities.' Should you have any information related to the unlawful sale of tobacco, you are encouraged to report it online to HMRC.
