Gordon Lyons Addresses Delays in Casement Park Redevelopment

A DUP minister has clarified that delays in the redevelopment of Casement Park are due to a funding gap and not his presence in office. Gordon Lyons, Communities Minister, emphasized that issues with the project predated his tenure. The East Antrim MLA revealed plans to discuss funding matters with Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn. Lyons expressed the desire for equitable investment in Northern Ireland's sports sector. Despite uncertainty, both ministers are in Washington D.C. for St Patrick's Day events. Benn highlighted the importance of commencing work at Casement Park before planning permission expires next summer, urging against clock-running tactics. The redevelopment, initially planned in 2011, faced setbacks due to legal challenges by local residents. Official statements suggest that funding difficulties hinder the project's progress, with the UK Government refraining from easing the financial shortfall. Lyons emphasized that the existing plans and available funding do not align, indicating a need for additional contributions to bridge the gap.
