Belfast Campaign Aims to End Violence-Led Homelessness Shame

Women who experience all forms of violence in the home in Northern Ireland are more likely to become homeless through lack of understanding, protection, and support, according to a new campaign.
Shifting the Narrative
The project aims to 'Shift the Shame' of violence-led homelessness from the victim to the perpetrator, demanding collaborative efforts in crafting key Steps to Safety. Last year, every 16 minutes, the police responded to a domestic abuse incident in Northern Ireland. The grim statistics underscore the urgent need for action and awareness to break the vicious cycle of trauma, abuse, and homelessness that many women face.
Empowering Change
Organized by the Women’s Resource and Development Agency (WRDA) with support from the Community Foundation of Northern Ireland (CFNI), the 'Shift the Shame' campaign seeks to challenge societal norms and ensure a safe escape for victims. The call for trauma-informed training, support services, and a holistic approach to tackling homelessness among women highlights the pressing need for structural reforms and a shared public responsibility.
Steps Towards Safety
The campaign advocates for a multi-agency approach to prevent homelessness among vulnerable women, urging policymakers and service providers to act swiftly and decisively. By fostering awareness and advocating for practical solutions, the initiative aims to provide a lifeline for those trapped in abusive environments, offering a path towards safety and stability.
