New Steps Towards Broadcasting Court Proceedings in Northern Ireland

Some court proceedings in Northern Ireland could soon be broadcast to the public under proposals being considered by Stormont.
Justice Minister Naomi Long has launched a public consultation seeking views on permitting the recording and broadcasting of certain court proceedings. Currently prohibited by legislation, the change aims to enhance public understanding of the judiciary's work and improve transparency in the court system.
The consultation includes proposals to broadcast judgments, legal exchanges in the Court of Appeal, and sentencing remarks in Crown Court cases. While ensuring the rights of victims and witnesses are respected, the move advocates for public access to justice processes.
Lady Chief Justice, Dame Siobhan Keegan, welcomed the consultation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the solemnity of court proceedings while promoting transparency.
Proposed types of proceedings for broadcasting include ones that would offer a clearer insight into judicial decisions, fostering public confidence in the justice system.
The consultation period runs until Wednesday, 16 July 2025. Responses can be submitted through the Department of Justice website or via CitizenSpace online platform.
