Belfast's £124k Investment in Safer Summer Beacons

Belfast City Council to Invest in Safer Summer Beacons
Details have emerged from City Hall revealing that Belfast City Council is allocating almost £125,000 towards community bonfire beacons this summer. The council's beacon programme aims to provide a safer and more environmentally responsible alternative to traditional bonfires, with 17 beacons already confirmed for this year.
New Approach with Beacon Programme
Beacons are designed to be reusable, featuring a two-part steel structure filled with carbon-neutral willow wood. These beacons are placed on a bed of sand to prevent damage to surfaces when lit. Each beacon comes equipped with lighting, a safety kit, signage, and a fire safety assessment.
Community Engagement and Approval
Belfast City Council has actively engaged with community representatives to promote the use of beacons, supporting constituted organizations in transitioning from traditional bonfires. Before receiving a beacon, groups must undergo a safety assessment and sign an agreement outlining their responsibilities in managing the beacon.
The council's budget for the beacon programme includes a contribution of £30,000 from the Executive Office, reflecting a continued effort to ensure safer and cleaner summer celebrations in Belfast.
