Controversy Erupts Over Plans for Homeless Centre in Belfast City Center

Belfast councillors are to visit a city centre street before making a decision on an application for a new site for a homeless day centre.
City Center Site Conversion
Belfast City Council's Planning Committee agenda lists an application for the change of use from a taxi passenger terminal, cafe, office, and newsagent to a category D1 homeless day centre at 35a King Street. The proposed day centre aims to offer meals, washing, and changing facilities along with a social amenity area. It is scheduled to operate four days a week from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
Community Objections
Over 39 objections have been filed concerning the application, primarily from residents of the nearby Tannery building. Concerns raised include issues related to homeless individuals and drug users causing disturbances in the area, posing safety and security risks to the neighborhood.
Support and Consultation
Despite objections, the Belfast Homeless Service plans to expand its operation by moving to King Street. The plan has garnered support from various figures including Lady Mary Peters, emphasizing the critical role homeless shelters play in supporting vulnerable members of the community. Consultations with relevant authorities are ongoing.
