Almost one in five secondary schools in Northern Ireland has five or more fast food outlets within a 400-meter radius, according to a recent study by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). The study highlighted marked variations across different regions, with an average of 2.4 times more fast food outlets than grocery retailers. Naomi Davidson, head of science and surveillance at FSA NI, stressed the importance of understanding the impact of fast food availability on children's health, especially in deprived areas.

Efforts to Address Obesity

Professor Susan Jebb, chair of the Food Standards Agency, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to combat the prevalence of obesity in Northern Ireland. Recognizing the role of healthy food environments in schools, she highlighted the significance of shaping healthy habits in children for lifelong well-being. The report aims to inform policy development to ensure children have access to nutritious meals during the school day.
