Alarming Numbers: Sexual Violence Faced by NI Schoolgirls

Thousands of school aged girls across Northern Ireland have been subjected to sexual violence including 'upskirting' or 'being coerced into sexual acts', according to a new survey.

Survey Findings

A survey of 16-year-olds, published by the Executive Office at Stormont on Thursday, revealed shocking statistics. 17% of girls reported experiencing some form of sexual violence, a figure significantly higher than the 3% reported by boys.

Types of Violence

Examples given included upskirting, being coerced into sexual acts, and unwanted touching. In addition, almost one-fifth of 16-year-olds had encountered online violence in the past year.

Gender Disparities

The report highlighted gender disparities, with girls more likely to face online and psychological violence, while boys reported higher instances of physical violence. The survey shed light on the challenges young girls and boys face in seeking help when confronted with gender-based violence.

Call to Action

The report calls for collective action to combat violence against women and girls. The newly launched Strategic Framework to End Violence Against Women and Girls aims to address the pervasive issue of gender-based violence extensively experienced by women and girls in Northern Ireland.
